Yo-yo dieting is caused by unnatural changes in your eating and exercise habits. If you suddenly go from the value menu at the local fast food place to a diet shake, you're making an unnatural change. You'll lose weight, but you won't keep that weight off once you stop with the shakes. Even a more sensible diet plan will make a temporary change to your body. In order to make your new you permanent, you need to raise your metabolism. Your metabolism is the process your body goes through to break down the food you eat and turn it into energy. If you aren't burning your calories fast enough, you body will store those calories for a later day. Think of it as a bonfire, with the wood representing the food you eat every day. If you cut more wood than you can use in the fire, you'll have to store in "out back" until you do need it. Build a bigger fire and you'll use up more wood and before you know it, that big heap "out back" is down to a nothing. So, let's look at thing you can do to build a bigger fire and boost your metabolism. If you look at this list of 10 ways to raise your metabolism, you'll see most of these are very simple. They're things you can do right now to positively impact your life as you continue with your post natal exercise routine. 1. Consume more! What? Consume more? That's crazy. Not really. It's not the quantity of food you eat, it's the amount of calories. If you eat lower calorie foods in high quantities, your body will actually burn more calories per hour. To put it another way, you burn calories burning calories. 2. Aerobic exercise 4 to 5 times a week: Even if you're just jumping rope for 20 minutes, you're telling your body that it need to burn more calories. This will jump start your metabolism and keep it running all day. That means, you'll still be reaping the benefits later in the day when you're sitting through another office meeting. 3. Don't resist the resistance training: When you replace 10 pounds of fat with 10 pounds of muscle, you'll burn an extra 100 calories every day. In other words, you'll bring your baseline of calories burned each day up by 100. Imagine starting each day with 100 few calories to burn in the gym. That weight training pays a nice dividend you may not have expected. 4. Replace your regular tea with green tea: Study after study suggests the properties in green tea will boost your metabolism. So, when you're not drinking water, consider the magic dieters potion, green tea. 5. Spice things up a bit: Thai, Mexican, or even Szechuan foods are going to be spicy by nature. Try to move your intensity up in small increments. Don't over do it all at once. 7. More means less: Increasing the number of meals you eat each day, without increasing your caloric intake, will do wonders for your metabolism. Your body burns more calories digesting food. Eating 6 small meals instead of 3 large ones will keep your body from going into starvation mode, and stop you from binge eating. 8. Get your fitness sleep: Beauty sleep is one thing, but fitness sleep really does work. If you're not getting the right amount of sleep each night, you're only making things more difficult. Your body can't metabolize carbs properly with out enough sleep. 9. Drink more water on ice: Drinking cold water will actually cause your body to burn more calories. Believe it or not, it takes energy to counteract the effects of that ice cold water on your body temperature. Studies have shown drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will help you lose up to10 pounds in a year. 10. More protein in your diet: Your body will consume more calories burning protein than it does burning sugar or other simple carbs.
